None of this is Snow
The 2026 January winter storm brought multiple days of below-freezing temperatures, freezing rain, sleet, and snow to roughly half of the US, including my home state of Texas.
While this may be the norm in the northeastern US, the North Dallas area lacks the infrastructure to handle this kind of winter weather, leading to widespread shutdowns. Municipalities don’t clear roads, houses aren’t built to insulate and protect plumbing from sub-freezing temperatures, and individuals don’t spend money on equipment needed only once every 3 to 5 years. It’s no different than New Yorkers panicking when temps get into the 90’s; Texas is equipped for temps in the 90’s and 100’s, but New York isn’t.
It was 13˚ F this morning, and we are expecting 80+ consecutive hours of sub-freezing temperatures. What you see in these photos is not snow, but sleet frozen into a solid sheet of ice. I walked across my ice-covered lawn without leaving a single footprint. Walking over the sidewalks and across the streets left no record of my ever being there, and the few people who did venture out in their cars and trucks left few tracks.
